The theme for the UsFolk 5 exhibition, hosted in The Naughton Gallery @ Queens, was the 5 senses, so I choose sound, and continuing the bird trend focused on the blackbirds that call my back garden home. I’m very lucky to live right next to a bird sanctuary, so get greeted by their chit chat every morning as I’m dragging myself to work. It’s fairly easy to predict my mood for the day based on whether they put a smile on my face or melt my head when I just want an extra 5 minutes of peace and quiet…
The piece was created largely by placing and rejigging audio waves from recordings from my door and then working over the top of this with pen/ink/digital editing. I like to think there’s 100’s of little stories contained within it, with the blackbirds flirting with eachother, the magpies slabbering and starting scraps and the owls telling them all to F*** up…
